What: XTERRA Off-Road Triathlon
Located 35 miles Northeast of downtown Knoxville, in Morristown TN, Panther Creek and Cherokee Lake provide an incredible backdrop for some serious off road fun. Panther Creek State Park has played host to XTERRA Panther Creek for over a decade now and this year we have revamped a few things to make the race even better! The course is challenging enough for a seasoned athlete, yet gentle enough for the beginner, as it winds it’s way around one of the state’s most beautiful and most visited parks.
The swim start, transition area, and finish line will be in very close proximity to each other at the Panther Creek State Park boat dock. Parking is available near the race start.
Transition will open at 6:00 am the day of the race and will close at 7:50 am. Spectators will not be allowed in transition at any point during the race (strictly enforced). Athletes will be ushered down to the swim start.
XTERRA Panther Creek will abide by the rules and regulations set forth by USAT.
The race will be scored using chip timing. Awards ceremony will immediately follow the conclusion of the race.
The two lap swim and bike course make this a very spectator friendly race.
Rustic group camping at Panther Creek State Park is included in your registration for Saturday night.

Overall Course Map
Panther Creek State Park Trail Map
Swim: 800 Meters (.50 mi)
The swim will be a mass start from the water of Panther Creek. Swimmers will navigate a two lap course around the Creek before exiting for transition. A concrete boat ramp will provide a safe an easy exit from the water for the swimmers, however, volunteers will be on hand to help if needed. A shoe drop will be available to the athletes for the paved run up to transition.
* The swim course consists of two laps.
* There will be an aid station available at Transition.
* Panther Creek and Cherokee Lake are known for their pristine waters. Updates on the legality of wetsuits will be posted prior to the race, however, this race has not been wetsuit legal in the past.
Bike: 15.4 mi
The bike course begins at the boat launch at Panther Creek and heads out for a clockwise loop via Deer Run Trail. The course takes a right turn onto Wagon Road Trail before taking another right turn onto Piney Cove Trail. Wagon Road Trail will provide riders with a great opportunity to fight for position on the trail. Cyclists will then cross over the paved road leading the boat ramp and jump onto Old Farm Trail. Old Farm Trail meets up with Pioneer Trail for a beautiful stretch through mature forests. Riders will then take a few connector trails which will lead to Trout Lily Trail. The first section of this trail consists of a grueling uphill climb, but soon gives way to a downhill stretch that offers some great views of Panther Creek. The bike course only follows the upper section of Trout Lily Trail before heading back towards transition on Deer Run Trail. At this time riders will either continue on to their second lap of the bike course, or head into transition to begin the run course.
* The bike course consists of two laps.
* There will be an aid station available at Transition.
* The bike course consists of predominantly single track trails that vary in difficulty. Because of the variety of the course, there are plenty of safe opportunities to pass other riders.
Run: 4.5 mi
The run course starts out the exact same way as the bike course. Runners will head out for a clockwise loop starting on Deer Run Trail and then stay left to continue on Wagon Road Trail. Wagon Road Trail follows Panther Creek and leads to a paved road crossing. The continues on using Panther Path Trail and leads to a wooden bridge crossing. After crossing the wooden bridge, runners will complete a loop on the Road to Recycling Trail before crossing the same bridge to rejoin with Panther Path Trail. Much of this part of the course resembles that of a cross country course. Panther Path Trail will take athletes around the edge of the park, across another paved road, and back to Wagon Road Trail. After a quick stint on Wagon Road Trail, the course makes a left turn onto Piney Cove Trail. Piney Cove Trail will lead runners back to the paved boat launch road where they will make a final right turn and head to the finish. The finish line will be right at the water’s edge and will allow athletes to really make a splash as they finish.
* The run course is one lap.
* There will be an aid station available at the finish line / transition.
